A Look into Life in the Bethany Memory Care Unit

Premier care for each and every one of our residents is our top priority here at Bethany Retirement Living. In our Memory Care Unit, the same statement remains true. We have been trusted to serve memory care residents for the last 22 years, as we provide a calm, structured environment with therapeutic programming for each resident. Although each case is different, we strive to provide the best aid we can for every patient’s unique situation.

One relationship at Bethany came alive again when a resident of our Memory Care Unit remembered her husband for the first time in ages. Staff recall that a husband came to visit his wife in Bethany’s Memory Care Unit on a daily basis.  His wife had not communicated or recognized him as her husband in quite some time. One day he got to her unit, walked up to her and said, “Hi honey, do you know who I am?” On this particular day she instantly recognized him. Her face lit up with the biggest smile and she said, “You’re my husband!” And proceeded to give him a big hug and kiss.

Another milestone moment occurred in the Bethany Memory Care Unit, as a daily visiting husband came to see his wife on his 90thbirthday. She had not communicated any sensical words in many, many months. On this day, after he greeted her, she opened her eyes and said, “I love you!”

Over these years, we have come to realize that every resident with dementia who chooses Bethany for their care is a success for many different reasons. For instance, at Bethany we are able to seek out the individual strengths of every resident, even when they are long into the disease, to help them be successful by providing personalized care. Daily programing and specialized staff here at Bethany are extraordinary benefits to any resident with memory care needs. This programming provides our residents with opportunities to engage in everyday tasks and hobbies of theirs at a simplified level that promotes their success. At Bethany, we must remember that every situation is unique and comes with a new set of challenges, but stories like these which show our residents overcoming those challenges are what bring us joy and hope.
