The ability to communicate effectively is always important, but for seniors it can be vital. An emergency can happen when a senior cannot effectively communicate what they need or a problem they might have. When speech skills are diminished, speech therapy for seniors may become necessary. Kari Kapitan, a Speech Language Pathologist at Bethany Retirement Living, explains that, “Speech Therapy is available to any resident at Bethany Retirement Living.”

The goal of speech therapy for seniors is to increase functional communication, cognitive skills, and teach safe swallowing by introducing diet modifications and special feeding technique. “The majority of my caseload at Bethany is usually related to dysphagia, difficulty in swallowing” said Kari. “Addressing cognitive and dysphagia issues contributes to the patient’s ability to safely return to their prior level of functioning in a less restrictive environment.”
